MTS Research Team Biographies

Peter Beuttell, Managing Director

Peter Beuttell is a self-taught market technician with over 30 years’ experience in investment research.  He established independent global investment research provider, MTS Research, in 1989 after gaining a valuable insight into the approach and services required by institutional investors following eight years of using technical analysis as a pension fund manager.

Under Peter’s guidance, MTS Research has developed into a leading technical analysis provider and now services a global client base with the support of a team of five, including Marketing Manager, Marcus Berry, and IT Manager, Vaughan Try.

After completing an Economics degree at Warwick University, Peter began his career as a Chartered Accountant in 1975 working for Arthur Andersen & Co. in London, articled to prominent City figure, Ian Hay Davison.   Peter’s next role was as Manager at the rapidly expanding Provident Mutual Managed Pension Funds in 1981.  After three years there he moved to Hill Samuel and became a Director of Hill Samuel Pensions Investment Management Limited.

In 1987 Peter was head-hunted by Morgan Grenfell Asset Management (subsequently Deutsche Asset Management) for the role of Portfolio Manager in its US pensions management arm, Morgan Grenfell Investment Services Limited.  The position involved managing money in EAFE markets (Europe, Australasia, Far East) for US and Canadian clients such as American Airlines and American Petrofina, and Peter achieved first quartile perfomance for them by blending fundamental and technical analysis in his investment decision-making.  It was as a result of this exposure to international markets that Peter subsequently established himself as a leading technical expert on Japan.

When Peter left the company in 1989, Morgan Grenfell asked him to set up a technical analysis consultancy so they could continue to use his expertise.   Since then Peter has twice been ranked in 1st position by the prestigious Primark Extel Survey of UK Fund Managers in the Technical Analyst category.

Vaughan Try, IT Manager

Vaughan Try is responsible for all aspects of IT at MTS Research, including computerised technical analysis and programming for MTS-created custom indicators, and managed the Knowledge Transfer Partnership from the company end. He gained his Investment Managment Certificate in 2009 and is currently studying for the Society of Technical Analysts Diploma.

Vaughan works closely with Managing Director Peter Beuttell and supervises the in-house team with responsibility for the production of MTS Research’s regular publications as well as for the company website.

Vaughan joined MTS Research in 1999 after gaining a combined Geology and Sport Science degree from Cheltenham & Gloucester College.
